Elder abuse

Responsibility : Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux

Abuse of older people may take various forms, including:

  • negligence by not meeting an older person's essential needs;

  • physical abuse (sexual abuse, injury);

  • psychological abuse (threats, humiliation, isolation, intimidation);

  • forced medical treatment;

  • material exploitation (misappropriation of assets belonging to an older person).
Other important aspects of elder abuse are ageism (discrimination based on age), stereotyping and social behaviours that diminish self-esteem and undermine dignity.

If you are abused in any of these ways, you may file a complaint with a CLSC.
