Under the rent supplement program, if you are a low-income individual, you may obtain financial assistance allowing you to live in a dwelling in the private-sector or belonging to a housing cooperative or non-profit organization.
Under this program, which is administered by the Société d’habitation du Québec (SHQ), the rent you pay must correspond to that of a dwelling in low-rental housing (HLM), i.e. 25% of your total income for the calendar year preceding the signing of the lease. Your total income is your personal income if you live alone; otherwise, it is that of your household. The rent supplement makes up the difference between the rent agreed upon with the landlord and the contribution that you make.
