Shelter allowance program

Responsibility : Société d’habitation du Québec

If you are a low-income individual and spend a considerable portion of your total income on housing, i.e., 30 % or more, you may be eligible for the Shelter Allowance Program. The program is aimed at homeowners, tenants, rooming house occupants, and anyone sharing a dwelling with one or more persons.

The amount of that non-taxable assistance is determined according to the following factors:

  • type of household and number of members;

  • monthly rent;

  • total household income.

Those who qualify for the assistance:
  • individuals 55 or older who live alone;

  • couples where at least one spouse is aged 55 or over;

  • low-income families having one or more dependent children.

If you receive assistance from another government program, you may not be eligible.

To obtain the assistance
Applicants and their spouse, if applicable, must have filed Québec income tax returns. If that condition has been met, contact an office of Revenu Québec for the Shelter Allowance application (not available online).
