Prescription drug insurance

Responsibility : Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec

The public plan covers prescription drugs that are purchased in Québec and are included on the list published by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec.

YOU ARE UNDER 65
If you are not eligible for a private drug plan
You must register with the Régie for coverage under the public prescription drug plan.

If you are eligible for a private drug plan
You must use the coverage available under the private plan. You must also extend coverage to your spouse and children, if you have any and they are not covered under another private plan.

YOU ARE 65 OR OVER
You are automatically registered for the public plan. If you are eligible for a private insurance plan, you must choose one of the following options:

  • the RAMQ public plan only

  • the RAMQ public plan as well as a private plan providing additional coverage

  • your private plan

If you keep your private plan, you must cancel your registration for public drug insurance by calling the RAMQ or going to an RAMQ office during business hours.
