Allowance Program and Allowance for the Survivor Program

The Old Age Security program includes the Allowance Program and the Allowance for the Survivor Program. You may be eligible for the allowances if you are between the ages of 60 and 64 and have a low income.
• The Allowance Program provides a monthly non-taxable benefit for the 60-to-64-year-old married or common-law spouse of a person who receives the Old Age Security pension and is eligible for the Guaranteed Income Supplement.
• The Allowance for the Survivor Program provides a monthly non-taxable benefit for a surviving married or common-law spouse who has a low income and is not yet eligible for the Old Age Security pension.
