The death benefit is a single payment of $2500 for which applications may be submitted up to five yearsafter the death in question. The deceased must have contributed sufficiently to the Québec Pension Plan.
Who receives the benefit?
The death benefit is paid to the person or the recognized charity that paid the funeral expenses, up to the amount of the expenses or the amount of the benefit ($2500).
If you paid the funeral expenses, submit an application to the Régie des rentes du Québec within 60 days following the death, along with a photocopy of proof of payment. If the Régie repays expenses that are under $2500, the balance of the benefit may be paid to the heirs of the deceased or other eligible persons who apply for it.
If the Régie does not receive an application and proof of payment of the funeral expenses within 60 days, the full death benefit may be paid to the heirs of the deceased or other eligible persons who apply for it.
