Living abroad after retirement

Responsibility : Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada

If you decide to retire to a foreign country and stay there year-round or for a few months each year, you should prepare carefully before you leave, taking the following into consideration:

  • The level of security in your destination country;

  • The cost of living and tax laws;

  • Your state of health and the available healthcare in your adoptive country;

  • Necessary documentation: passport, visa, etc.
Be sure to request direct deposit of your pensions, annuities and benefits. On this subject, see the electronic guide Direct deposit: Registration and changes.
